Melissa Natasha Nyamushanya is a passionate Zimbabwean-Canadian storyteller and black mental health advocate whose work focuses on the exploration of identity, black femininity, responsibility, leadership, and family roles. With an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a concentration in criminology, along with graduate studies in public relations and corporate communications, Melissa melds her academic insight with her life experiences to create impactful narratives. Before her current endeavors, she shared her artistry as singer-songwriter Rain Akaï, captivating audiences through her powerful musical expression.

Melissa’s journey took a significant turn following a brain injury incurred during her time at Cedar Heights Residential Living, where she was involved in caregiving. This life-altering experience ignited a fierce resolve within her to transform her pain into purpose. In May 2023, she founded the Rain Akai Foundation, operating as RAF Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to destigmatizing mental health in black communities and creating culturally safe spaces for open discussions. Additionally, in March 2024, Melissa established SheGaze Media Inc, a black-owned boutique PR agency aimed at amplifying marginalized voices and narratives.

Her forthcoming book, The Oldest Daughter Playbook, draws inspiration from her experience as the oldest daughter in her immigrant family…a role that often necessitates an early embrace of responsibility and leadership. Through thoughtful cultural storytelling and personal reflection, Melissa seeks to illuminate the unique journeys of oldest daughters, particularly those navigating the dynamics of immigrant households.

This blog will serve as a platform for documenting Melissa’s reflections, and ideas that shape her writing journey and the themes of her upcoming book.
